Bread Consumers in Rivers to expect Hike in Price of Bread – Bakers Association

*Bakers groan under high cost of baking materials

BY IBRAHIM BAKARE

Consumers of Bread and other confectioneries are to expect hike in prices because of the high cost of materials for baking, especially bread.

Chairman of the Master Bakers Association of Nigeria, Rivers State Chapter, Kolawole Adelogun has said that the price of bread will increase across the state due to the high cost of raw materials used for baking.

He made the disclosure while appearing on a Port Harcourt based radio station live program .

Adelogun said that there has been an upward review of the price of bread to enable bakers produce quality bread for consumers following the high cost of raw materials in the market.

He said: ”Sugar that was N13,500 before the lockdown is now N19,000. In fact, 85% of the materials being used to produce bread are imported. Since Dollar to Naira is on the higher side and most of these materials depend on dollar exchange, we have to increase the prices of bread across the state”.

Adelogun further explained that other states have begun to carry out this initiative with an increase of about 20% in the price of bread in the market due to the various expenses incurred in the production of bread.

According to him, ”About two or three weeks ago, Abia State Master Bakers went on strike and they have raised their prices. We are still meeting here in Rivers State to determine the final price to add to the original price, maybe a 50 or 100 naira increase”.
