Residents of Port Harcourt raise alarm over renewed Police extortion, brutality despite #EndSARS

*Measures have been put in place to curb the excesses and misconduct of some Officers and men of the Command–Spokesman

BY DANIEL EFEĀ

Residents of Port Harcourt have raised concerns the Police Officers and men in Rivers State Capital have renewed their unprofessional ways despite the nationwide #ENDSARS campaign that called for reforms in the Police Force.

Some Port Harcourt residents who  spoke during the Eyewitnesses segment phone-in programme of a Port Harcourt based radio today have accused the Police of resuming  extortions and brutalities in various roads in the State Capital.

This comes two months after the police authorities had assured of reforms following a massive protest across the country against Police brutality.

However, Police spokesperson in the state, Nnamdi Omoni, told Journalists in an interview that the State Command has put disciplinary measures for airing Police officers caught in the web of renewed allegations of Police extortion.

SP Omoni said the Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mukan, has directed Divisional Police Officers and Heads of Departments in the Command to re-double their efforts in monitoring their men and they would be held responsible for misconduct of Police Officers under them.

It will be recalled that weĀ  had reported about the pandemonium that broke out on Thursday, December 10 at Rukpokwu, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, as a Police InspectorĀ  allegedly shot a tricycle rider dead over N100 bribe.

It was reported that not less than four persons later died due to gunshots from stray bullets wounds fired by the Police to disperse Protesters who insisted on bringing the Corpse of the Late Motorcycle Driver to the Rumuokoro Police Station.

However, various sources claimed that the deceased was shot dead at a close range by a policeman attached to a patrol team around 6.00am on Thursday due to his refusal to part with N100 bribe.
