Police Force headquarters Abuja has been alerted about the case of a man
identified as Daddy Geoffrey who is accusing some Police Officers in Port Harcourt of extorting N80,000 from him after they allegedly planted an “Indian Hemp” wrap on him.
The incident happened on Sunday July 23 when the Policemen of the Rivers State Police Command were conducting a stop-and-search.
Mr Godffrey in a post he tagged the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Adejobi Olumuyiwa, explained that on his way to support a friend’s party on Sunday night ( Dj kaydee), he got stopped by men of the @RiversPoliceNG at Obiri-Ikwerre junction (just before entering Ozuoba community).
Godffrey narrated that the Policemen searched him the first time and found nothing on him and instead of letting him go, one of the Police Officers kept on insisting he was a ” Yahoo boy”(a Cyber criminal) despite explaining to the officer about what he does for a living fell on deaf ears.
Mr Godffrey said he also showed them his ID card.
He said the Officers insisted that it was lie, and they made him to go sit at the Petrol station close to their checkpoint. After discussing among themselves, the Policemen asked him to come for a second search.
Mr Godffrey stated that he had not broken any known law, he submitted himself confidently for another search. The next thing was that they brought out a parcel of weed (he didn’t know where it came from but he was confident it wasn’t from his bag )cause they already searched the first time.
He stated that he insisted that it wasn’t his and the Policemen started slapping, physically assaulted by the one of the officers and he was immediately handcuffed.
He explained that he felt so helpless because he was alone and they made him to pay off his driver who left the scene.
Mr Godffrey maintained that he doesn’t smoke weed(Indian Hemp).
“I’ve never held a blunt in my life, I don’t even have friends that come to smoke at my place so why would I be carrying weed about? After everything, they said I was
going to their Police station and would later hand me over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.
He further said that “After about two hours on handcuff inside their van, they finally agreed for me to pay them 100k, but I ended up paying 80k cause that was the only money I could access at that point” he said.
Mr Godffrey said they forced him call his Accountant
so he could send the balance but the Accountant wasn’t online at that time.
Mr Godffrey is calling for both the refund of his hard earned money and justice for the abuse of his rights and privileges to free movements deposed that he is ready for drug tests to be conducted on him and see if he smokes or not.
He lamented in addition to the indignities meted out to him, his hard earned N80,000 extorted from him for a framed up offence he did not commit.
He said, he makes his money by honest living through Public Relations, he is also an owner of a short-let agency, a small properties business and hosting of Events.
In his response Geoffrey’s complaint, Nigeria Police Force Spokesman, Prince Adejobi Olumuyiwa, said: “We will ask the Rivers State command to take it up, while I follow up. Good narration, but we will need to hear from the men, too, since none of us here was at the scene. But I can assure you we will critically and professionally look into it, and ensure justice. Get me on my line, send sms to me”.
