Real Reasons Senator Godswill Akpabio Defected To APC
…His 2023 Project
Although 5-years to a serious politician like Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio is not a time of insignificant but worth being recognised as a period to save his country.
2023 is the year the next President of Nigeria if elected in 2019 must have completed his tenure in office. And for the South-East and South-South geo-political zones, taking a shot at the Presidency Aso-Rock Villa in 2023 is a project to be fought for today. While the Peoples Democratic Party-PDP is currently jostling to take over the reins of political power from the incumbent President, Muhammadu Buhari without understanding the political matrix of the South Easterners and South-South people that should the Northern part of Nigeria complete 8-years by 2023, it will be an easy work-over for the South Easterners and the minorities in the South-South to look deeper and produce a Presidential candidate that will pilot the affairs of Nigeria. For Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, supporting a Northern Presidential Candidate that is not Muhammadu Buhari the incumbent President will be politically suicidal for the interest of South-Easterners and South-South people.
The reasons being that a PDP President in 2019 will destabilize the country’s political cohesion and harmony as the people of South-East have not been elected President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria since the end of the Nigeria-Biafrian civil-war in 1970. The only closest attempt was when late Architect Alex Ekwueme was nominated as Presidential running-mate to Alhaji Shehu Shagari in the 1974 General elections under National Party of Nigeria-NPN of which they won the election but were in office until December 31st, 1984 after being oust by military junta.
For Senator Godswill Akpabio seeing further in 2023 for the interest of his good people of Akwa Ibom and South-South. Taking early exit from the opposition political party-PDP to Senator Godswill Akpabio prior to the 2019 General elections remains a joker to his political opponents, who in their calculations must have jeered at his decision to dump PDP for All Progressive Congress-APC.
So, it is now clear that the Akwa Ibom State former Governor and current Senator in the 8th National Assembly, Obong Godswill Akpabio has much political followers across the country and across party lines, as his defection to APC occupied public debate at various fora, even at “bukas”, motor-parks, and even among villages who through this defection now see him as a political juggernaut.
Events that took place at Ikot Ekpene stadium in Akwa Ibom on Wednesday 8th of August, 2018 actually showed presence of mammoth crowd that came out to witness his defection declaration to his new political party being A.P.C is an indication of a politician who has control and influence over his followers. For being given the leadership of his newly found political party-APC is indeed a reward to a loyalist and patriotic Nigeria.
Further inquiry by www.towncrier.ng shows that the uncommon defection as was described by the man himself is unique in several perspective. For one, as earlier mentioned, he made sure that the future of Nigeria is secured as 2023 Presidential is a make or mare election that will either unify the country or break it down should the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari is not re-elected in 2019 General elections.

With the political power play going on in the 8th National Assembly as members of the opposition political party-PDP are holding unto the leadership of the two legislative chambers-Federal House of Representatives and The Senate, it is imperative that stability is brought in to douse tension and make the business of law-making less acrimonious one with the virement of 2018 Budget that includes Independent National Electoral Commission-INEC preparation fund in the Appropriation Act of 2018 top in the agenda of the 8th National Assembly, any patriotic Lawmaker will see reasons to declare bipartisan support for the government as any delay will bring in anarchy for the 2019 General elections.
